DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT | KARL DONOGHUE
Originally from Yorkshire, designer Karl Donoghue moved to London in 1991 to study fashion at Ravensbourne College of Design. After graduating, he launched his own luxury label, pushing his individual perception of shearling, leather and fur. Donoghue’s collection rapidly gained popularity and his unique creations led to collaborations with many high-end retailers. Kate Moss and Olivia Palermo are only a couple of his celebrity clients.
Karl Donoghue finds inspiration in the beauty of natural skins with their unique intrinsic qualities. His continued exploration of new materials and textures is the basis of the design process. The British designer works closely with a number of tanneries developing ideas, colours and finishes for each collection, as well as with an Italian supplier to design every button, zipper pull and buckle in buffalo horn. All of his pieces are handcrafted, using specialist knives for the highest quality skins and then constructed by a single machinist before hand finishing. Working in London and traveling the world also has a huge influence on the styling and detailing of the Donoghue’s work.
Many of Karl Donoghue’s factories are based in London, ensuring a consistent production process and high quality. All leathers used for Donoghue’s collections are the by-product of food production. which makes the pieces even more appealing.
