STYLE GUIDE: HOW TO WEAR STRIPES
Spring/Summer 2017 paraded vertical and horizontal stripes in every way imaginable. We saw the monochrome, the graphic and the colourful come down the runways from MSGM, Moncler and I’M Isola Marras to 5Preview and Maison Labiche. Now it’s time for you, too, to get in line.
An unwavering fashion favourite, stripes have rich history. Bayadere stripes, horizontal and brilliantly coloured, were made famous by the dancers in Marius Petipa’s 1977 ballet of the same name. Meanwhile, the pinstripe came about in the 19th century as a kind of city uniform worn by bank workers. Stripes have also always been synonymous with the French, starting with the uniforms of the revolutionaries of 1789. Most of all, we associate the design with dreamy holidays on the Cote d’Azur and with Coco Chanel, who included it in her 1917 Nautical Collection. Since then, Everyone from Jean Seberg to Brigitte Bardot has been photographed in Stripes.
With such a long history, how were stripes imagined for SS17? MSGM presented us with with off-the-shoulder tops and sundresses pairing stripes with their signature ruffles and Antonio Marras created a collection of jersey dresses to mix and match for his line I’M Isola Marras, while Maison Labiche‘s marinière aesthetic makes us dream of endless ocean views.
